Gardening: ‘incredibly exotic’ plants that can survive UK weather – what to plant now

According to GardeningExpress, plants such as bamboo and palms can add a more “exotic” and “tropical” look to a garden, while plants such as passionflowers and California lilac can add a “beautiful pop of color.” With spring in full force, what else can overseas gardeners plant this year?

Chris Bonnett, Founder of GardeningExpress, said: “Growing holiday plants at home is a great way to add another element to your garden that other people may not have.

“A lot of people don’t know they can grow a lot of these holiday plants in the UK because naturally your first thought is that they must need a warm climate to survive, which isn’t always the case.

“As long as the plants are hardy enough, there’s no reason we can’t grow them here, they will need to be kept out of severe frosts and colds.

“You certainly have more benefit from growing holiday plants if you have a greenhouse or conservatory, as they tend to stay quite warm and let in lots of light, but it’s certainly still possible to grow these plants. without either of those things.”

Gardeners will also be happy to know that palms can grow in the UK because they are hardy.

Experts have recommended the chasun palm and the needle palm for cultivation in UK gardens.

They added: “For the first week of planting you will want to water your palm tree daily, after that you will want to keep it moist but not clogged.”

Cherry blossoms, which originated in China and arrived in Japan, are beautiful trees that can be grown in the UK.

GardeningExpress said this “beautiful” and “sweet” tree adds a light splash of color to any outdoor space.

Experts said: “Cherry blossoms do best in full sun and it is important to keep the soil moist but well-drained too.

“Trees grown in containers can be planted all year round, but if you are trying to plant bare root it should be done between November and March.”

Passiflora, a hardy variety of the passion flower, is a gorgeous flower that can add lots of bright color to the garden.

According to experts, these climbing flowers look “incredibly exotic”.

They added: “It is best to grow them on a wall with good sun exposure and try to protect it from cold winds.

Bamboo is also another addition to the garden that can add a tropical flair.

Plus, it’s known to be indestructible, making it perfect for beginner gardeners.

Experts explained, “They are quite easy to grow as they are hardy and low maintenance. The best time to plant bamboo is spring and you’ll want to make sure to keep the soil moist and well-drained.

“Bamboo hates being dry, so it’s important to keep an eye on it during the summer.”
