Swift Current SARCAN now blocks with jars – SwiftCurrentOnline.com

Don’t pass up the glass the next time you take a trip to Swift Current SARCAN.

SARCAN now accepts “household” glass at its recycling centre. This change helps reduce the amount of glass waste in landfills and makes it a little easier to determine if a glass item is meant to be recycled.

Swift Current’s Superintendent for Solid Waste and Diversion, Keegan Story, shared some examples of the type of items that fall into the household glass category.

“That would apply to things like your jam jars, your Cheese Whiz containers, and glasses that aren’t beverage containers,” Story said. “Glasses that SARCAN previously took with a deposit.”

These types of items and materials will no longer require deposit and will simply be received like other recyclable materials.

“Anything we can keep out of landfills just helps extend the life there,” Story recalled. “We have a lot of people who are very passionate about recycling and glass recycling is something we’ve gotten a lot of calls and questions about.”

For the curious, SARCAN will accept domestic, clear and colored glass, provided it is thoroughly cleaned and the top removed. All household glass must be presented inside the depot where it will be sorted by the employees. There will be no drop off bins for these items.

SARCAN does not accept ceramic, Pyrex, cooking glass, mirror glass, flat glass or porcelain. These do not fall into the household glass category.

So far, the plan for recycled household glass is for clear glass to be refined into beads that will be used in reflective paint for highways and streets. Colored glass will be recycled into fiberglass insulation for homes.

You can find a complete list of approved household glass containers on the SARCAN website here.
