Will Smith and his wife Jada may have “one of the ugliest divorces in showbiz history” after tensions grew between the two following the actor’s controversial behavior at the Oscars last month.
The 53-year-old actor was banned from the Oscars for 10 years after he stormed the stage and slapped host Chris Rock in the face.
His outburst came after Chris joked with Will’s wife, actress Jada Pinkett Smith, that he couldn’t wait to see her in GI Jane 2, referencing how Demi Moore shaved her head for the role.
But Jada, who suffers from alopecia and shaved her hair after it started falling out, looked visibly upset as she rolled her eyes and her face fell.
Will suddenly stormed the stage and slapped Chris before returning to his seat and shouting, “Keep my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth.”
Public opinion was divided over what happened, but it now appears tensions are running high between the couple behind closed doors.
“Ever since the Oscars scandal, the tensions between them have been palpable,” an insider told Heat Magazine.
“There have been issues for years, but they’re barely talking to each other right now. If they were to part ways, Will has a $350 million fortune of which Jada would be entitled to half under California law. .
“This could be one of the ugliest divorces in showbiz history and last longer than Angelina and Brad’s.
“Will obviously doesn’t want that, but he can’t take too much,” the insider added.
The actor apologized to the Academy and his fellow nominees when he received his award, then issued a creeping public apology to Chris.
He wrote: “Violence in any form is toxic and destructive. My behavior at the Oscars last night was unacceptable and inexcusable.
“Making jokes at my expense is part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.
“I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of place and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no room for violence in a world of love and kindness.”
He added: “I would also like to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show, all the participants and everyone watching around the world.
“I would like to apologize to the Williams family and my King Richard family. I deeply regret that my behavior has marred what has been an otherwise magnificent journey for all of us.
“I’m a work in progress. Sincerely, Will.”
